Berlin Brandenburg Airport has changed the way passengers access its security controls. Since 26 May 2026, time-slot bookings for the BER Runway security entrance have no longer been available.
The airport said passengers were increasingly choosing the modern CT screening lanes in Terminals 1 and 2 instead of using the separately booked BER Runway entrance in the central area of Terminal 1.
Why BER Runway time-slot bookings ended
According to BER, 90 per cent of passengers who had booked a BER Runway slot during the previous month did not use it. Many instead selected the newer CT security lanes shortly before reaching the control area.
The BER Runway booking service had been introduced in August 2022 and its available capacity was repeatedly adjusted according to passenger demand.
CT security lanes at Terminals 1 and 2
BER reported that passengers could use a total of 24 lanes with modern screening technology across Terminals 1 and 2.
At lanes equipped with CT scanners, BER stated that liquids of up to two litres per passenger could remain in hand luggage. Electronic devices also did not need to be unpacked. Passengers must still follow the current instructions displayed at the airport and given by security staff.
Conventional screening lanes have different rules
At the time of the airport announcement, the central Terminal 1 lanes previously used for BER Runway access still had conventional X-ray equipment.
BER stated that only liquids in containers of up to 100 millilitres were permitted at those conventional lanes and that liquids and electronic devices had to be removed from hand luggage. The airport also announced that these lanes would receive new scanners, with refurbishment planned to begin in autumn 2026.
Planning security control before a BER departure
Current waiting times for the different security controls are available through the BER website, the BER app and airport monitors. According to the airport, every security control provides access to every departure gate.
Passengers should still allow sufficient time for check-in, baggage drop, security control, passport control where required and the walk to the gate. A pre-booked airport transfer can be arranged using the pickup address, flight time, terminal, passenger count and luggage requirements.
