Berlin transport operator BVG has published an updated schedule for the reconstruction of the northern section of the U6. Trains are expected to return between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Alt-Tegel for the start of the 2027 school year.
The section has been closed since November 2022 while BVG renews the embankment, tracks, bridges, technical systems and several stations. Replacement buses continue to serve the affected part of northern Berlin.
When the northern U6 is expected to reopen
BVG plans to restore train services on the reconstructed section between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Alt-Tegel at the beginning of the 2027 school year.
Track construction, cable installation, electrical equipment and signalling systems are scheduled to continue until spring 2027. Technical inspections, test runs, final acceptance and commissioning will then take place before passenger services resume.
Why the U6 reconstruction took longer
The project was initially planned as targeted maintenance of individual structures. After bridges, stations and the embankment were uncovered, additional damage became visible in parts of the approximately 70-year-old infrastructure.
BVG decided to repair the newly identified damage during the current project. Planning changes, material delivery times and a weather-related interruption during the winter of 2026 also affected the construction schedule.
Replacement transport and alternative routes
Frequent accessible replacement buses are expected to continue operating between Kurt-Schumacher-Platz and Alt-Tegel until approximately August 2027.
BVG also lists the U8 to Karl-Bonhoeffer-Nervenklinik and the S25 between Karl-Bonhoeffer-Nervenklinik and Tegel as an alternative route for some journeys.
Planning journeys in northern Berlin
Passengers travelling through Reinickendorf or Tegel should check current BVG information before departure and allow additional time for transfers, replacement buses and possible timetable changes.
For journeys with luggage, children, appointments or fixed arrival times, a pre-booked city transfer can be arranged using the pickup address, passenger count, luggage and destination.
